Wellington Hoya and Epiphytic Plant Society

As recorded in the first and last issues of their magazine, named Epiflora, the Wellington Hoya and Epiphytic Plant Society (WHEPS) was established in December 1990 and ran for 21 years.
 
It was formed by some members of the Wellington Cacti and Succulent Society who had special interests in growing hoyas and epiphytic cacti, particularly epiphyllums and schlumbergeras. Some of their founding members were already members of the Auckland Epiphyllum and Hoya Society from whom they received help and encouragement in the establishment years.
 
Jane Griffith was the first President and Roy Griffith the first Secretary and Treasurer, and both founders remained actively involved throughout the life of the society. Their society membership grew and they hosted regular meetings, speakers, and outings. From about 2006, the scope of their society expanded to include bromeliads, tillandsias, and orchids.
 
However, as with many other specialist clubs and societies throughout the world nowadays, it became difficult to attract younger members, and the older members were less able or willing to take on the responsibilities of running the society. Their last meeting was held on the 12th March 2011.
