The RNZIH is the International Cultivar Registration Authority (ICRA) for several New Zealand native genera.
The RNZIH is the International Cultivar Registration Authority (ICRA) for several New Zealand native genera – Coprosma, Leptospermum, Phormium, Pittosporum, and the hebes (NZ native shrubby Veronica – Veronica L. sect. Hebe (Comm. ex Juss) Benth. – including plants formerly in the genera Hebe, Chionohebe, Heliohebe, Leonohebe, and Parahebe).
Cultivar registration through the RNZIH is free and allows cultivars’ names, origins, parentage and descriptions to be recorded, as an important part of our horticultural heritage. Registration helps prevent name repetition, confusion over correct identities, and documents a history of introductions. This work is important for promoting a wider diversity of cultivars to be planted, native plant and cultivar conservation, and for plant breeding.

ICRA Personal Data Statement: What we do with your data
This statement is for those who have submitted, or are considering submitting, a Cultivar Registration Form to the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture Inc (RNZIH) as an International Cultivar Registration Authority (ICRA). This statement is consistent with the UK Data Protection Act (1998) and similar legislation in other countries.
In completing and sending the Cultivar Registration Form as an individual you are supplying the RNZIH as an ICRA, which is a voluntary non-statutory organisation, with information that identifies you (“personal data”). This does not apply to registrations submitted in the name of an organisation, such as a commercial nursery.
Registration of your plant as a cultivar requires the ICRA to retain these personal data and in submitting this registration form you are agreeing to the storage of the data that relates to you. This information will be kept indefinitely and for the purpose detailed below. The ICRA undertakes to hold your personal data securely and not to make it available to anyone else during your lifetime, except where required for the purpose of cultivar registration.
Completion of the registration process requires the ICRA to publish information about newly registered plant names in print. The RNZIH ICRA do this by means of a Register, as well as being made available online on the RNZIH website. The website and any related publications contain either just the name or the name and an abbreviated address of the registrant. When known, the abbreviated address will consist of just the home town, county/state and country. Occasionally we share data on registered plant names with others involved with cultivar registration. Should this occur we will try to ensure there is an adequate level of protection in such countries in relation to processing personal data.
By completing the application form and reading this statement, you are granting permission for the RNZIH to:
- Include your name in published outputs from the Register database, and make it available through the RNZIH website
- Include your abbreviated address (as home town, county/state, country) in published outputs from the Register database, and to make it available through the RNZIH website
- Share relevant personal data relating to this application with other organisations involved with cultivar registration
- Use images and other uploads for any scientific or educational purpose in relation to the registration and correct naming of plants, whether through electronic or printed media. The copyright of the images will remain with the registrant. If you are not the copyright holder or have further questions, please seek advice from the registrar.
The completed form may contain personal data about other people involved in the origin and development of the cultivar. Where possible, you should have obtained their permission to include their personal data if they are still living at the time of this application and these data are not already in the public domain.
